Health literacy refers to our ability to navigate among information related to our health. It also includes how we access this information, how well we understand it, and whether we are able to apply it correctly in everyday life. This includes, for example, interpreting medical information materials, choosing between treatment options, or even making decisions related to a healthy lifestyle.
Health literacy is not static knowledge, but a continuously developable skill that plays a decisive role in both individual and societal health status. People with higher levels of health literacy are more likely to make informed decisions, take a more active role in their own healing processes, and cooperate more effectively with the healthcare system.
Research clearly shows that better health literacy brings tangible benefits. Those who are able to interpret and apply health information at a higher level generally lead healthier lifestyles, adhere to treatment instructions to a greater extent, develop chronic diseases less frequently, and experience better overall health. All of this is important not only from the perspective of individual well-being, but also contributes to the sustainability of the healthcare system in the long term.
The Health Literacy Award, established in 2016 by the Association of Innovative Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, was created with the aim of drawing attention to the importance of health literacy and recognizing initiatives that actively contribute to its development. The award provides a unique platform for all organizations, professionals, and communities that help people manage their health-related issues more consciously and confidently through innovative solutions.
Each year, a diverse range of programs are submitted to the call: healthcare institutions, civil organizations, educational initiatives, and even projects developing digital solutions present their best practices. The common goal of these programs is to make health information more understandable, reduce information barriers, and support the public in navigating an increasingly complex healthcare environment.
A particular value of the award is that it not only recognizes already proven successful projects, but also places emphasis on innovation, new approaches, and social impact. During the evaluation, key criteria include, for example, the accessibility, clarity, and practical applicability of the programs, as well as their ability to achieve long-term change in the lives of those affected.
The Health Literacy Award also contributes to ensuring that good practices do not operate in isolation, but become known more widely. Presenting the awarded and submitted programs provides inspiration for other organizations, encourages collaboration, and supports knowledge sharing among stakeholders in the sector. This is especially important in a field where effective communication and the spread of proven methods can have a direct impact on people’s health.
The long-term goal of the initiative is to strengthen the level of health literacy in society, and in parallel support the development of a more conscious, responsible, and active patient role. In this way, the Health Literacy Award is not only a recognition, but also a continuously evolving professional community and awareness-raising initiative that contributes year by year to building a more health-conscious society.
The Association of Innovative Pharmaceutical Manufacturers contributes to the development of this field not only through the Health Literacy Award, but also by regularly examining and analyzing the health literacy level of the Hungarian population. The research supported by AIPM aims to provide a comprehensive picture of how people think about their health, what sources they use for information, how well they understand health information, and how they use it in their everyday decisions.
Repeated, representative surveys provide the opportunity for different dimensions of health literacy—such as access to information, its understanding, and its practical application—to be tracked over time. This not only helps to map the current situation accurately, but also makes it possible to identify the areas and social groups facing the greatest challenges.
The research results thus create an important foundation for the development of programs and initiatives—including those related to the Health Literacy Award—that can support the improvement of public health literacy in a targeted and effective way. Through this activity, AIPM contributes to ensuring that health literacy is not merely a theoretical concept, but a measurable, developable, and long-term improvable societal skill.
